Middlesex County Fair in Sepia

Middlesex County Fair, August 3, 2009 - Opening Day

Middlesex County Fair, August 3, 2009 - Opening Day

The Middlesex County Fair in East Brunswick, New Jersey had its opening day on Monday, August 3, and we had the fun of attending. I found this photo rather dull, so I decided to convert it to sepia (desaturated it then added yellow and tiny bit of red back in). To bring back just the fun colors of the fair, I colored over some areas with the history brush.

Very nice. I like living so close to New Jersey. Lots of fun things to take pictures of.

It was a great fair, though I believe there are similar county fairs all over New Jersey all summer, so there probably is one closer to you.

And Pennsylvania is a great state, too – Easton, Bushkill Falls, Washington Crossing, New Hope, Philadelphia – all great spots and not far from us.

Great effect with the little bits of colors here and there.

  3. I really like the effect here, Leora. You are very clever. ;-)

  4. Ralph says:

The sepia tones this scene down. So the colorful flags can better beckon us to the fun times at the fair…Nice!

  5. Jew Wishes says:

I like the sepia blended with the bits of color. Nicely done, and it is so very nostalgic looking.

I like the tiny touches of color you left in your photo, Leora. I can see how the cars could overpower the scene, but you did a great job in masking them!

  7. Tricia says:

That had to be tedious work – Great job!

    • Leora says:

No, it’s actually the fun part, adding the color back in. I find it relaxing.

I always duplicate my first layer, and I work on the layer on top. You can then erase to see the layer below, or in Photoshop you can use the history paintbrush to see what the program remembers.

Oh nice!!! I should go! it still looks bit gloomy… may be color on tent roof could cheer it up?

    • Leora says:

So you crave even more colorization? I’m not going to play more with this one, but I appreciate the feedback.

Yes, Dhaval, you should go to the fair – it’s only one week. Although, as we told my daughter, we’ll take her again next year (she wanted to go every night).

      • Dhaval Jani says:

well ya or may be colorization of more prominent object.

Hahaha we used to have a fair ever summer vacation in my city in India and I would want to be there all the season :)

It did turn out fun. I haven’t figured out how to add the color back in. Hope you can stop by to see my sepia scene Thanks!

That works well in sepia. I’m slowly catching up after computer issues. You always have such lovely shots on your blog.

  11. I find it lovely with a little touch of color to the whole sepia scene :)
