Squash in Watercolor

This coming week is Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, and it is traditional to put certain symbolic foods on the table (see my post from last year about the simanim). Yesterday I did this watercolor of three squashes (or simply ‘squash’ – looks like the plural can be with or without the ‘es’).

What to do with squash? One of my friends said she will make my squash into a delicious squash soup. Will she share the recipe? Hmm. I could chop up the zucchini and saute it with onions, fresh garden basil and a bit of tomato. The little pumpkin, I told my son, is too tiny for a jack o’ lantern, but I told him we could buy a bigger one for that purpose for Sukkot (holiday in three weeks). I will probably make a stuffed squash for Friday night.

Gorgeous! I especially like how the orange from the pumpkin is reflected on the other two squash/squashes. :-)

My daughter and I are reading "Little House in the Big Woods", and we read that during the winter, Mary and Laura used the pumpkins which they stored in the attic as chairs and tables.

What an ingenious use of pumpkins. If we make the table in the sukkah a little lower, we could provide everyone with a pumpkin upon which to sit instead of a chair. Then again, maybe not.

Your watercolors are beautiful! And is there anything more 'homey' than squash?

I love the way this came out! How beautiful! I like the contrasts with the orange, and how bits of orange are flecked within the green squash and zucchini. I like how the curved end of the zucchini hovers above the pumpkin.

Yes! Pumpkin chairs...how creative!

Thanks, everyone, for enjoying and commenting on my squash. I don't expect I will have much time to paint until November at least, so this was a great release for me.
