Great Grandfather in Sepia

As a follow-up to my post about my grandfather, here is a photo of my great grandfather. I know little about him, but my father did tell me he was originally from a town called Gogol in Poland.

Just lovely! What a great man he looked like your great grandfather.
An orginial sepia!
How wonderful to have a portrait of your great grandfather. Such a special treasure.
I’m going to go read your post about him.
It was more black-and-white, so I did tint it a bit to sepia.
You are lucky to have a photo of him. Do you know where it was taken? And whose father was he, your grand-father’s?
I am pretty sure this is my father’s father’s father. But maybe I’m wrong. It is certainly my great grandfather.
You know I love stuff like this!
That is so cool that you have a picture of your great grand father.
What a wonderful picture! Was it taken in Poland or the US?
I especially love that it was shot in what appears to be the kitchen. It gives you an intimate, personal glimpse into your great-grandfather’s daily life!
I am assuming this is some tiny apartment in Brooklyn. Yes, I thought the setting was quite telling as well. That bowl is huge – perhaps that was all of dinner. And my guess is he is not used to the camera – there’s no eye contact. Very different from my mother’s relatives, who all play up to the camera.
What a remarkable photo. I LOVE that it’s showing real life, so often the photos from that era were so stiff and posed, no glimpse of what day to day life was like.
I should share more. Wednesday seems like a good day to scan in one old photo at a time.
This is so exciting to see, Leora. I have seen, just this past week, for the very first time, a photo of my maternal great-grandfather. And he is a young man, no less, in a picture with his wife. I have NEVER seen my great-grandmother except as a very old woman in her 90′s. It was really thrilling to see them so young and beautiful.
I hope you will put the photo online, Annie.
There is a photo of my paternal grandmother on her wedding day, looking very young and beautiful. Unfortunately, my father cannot locate it. It may have been destroyed in various moves and upheavals. Sigh.
Leora, a marvelous, very rare photo these days! You should scan more of them in and show them to us!
Thanks for the encouragement, Mary. I will probably do just that next week. Unless I am otherwise inspired.
That is a beautiful photo – you are so lucky to have it. I have just started some official research with a genealogist on my family history – it’s so opaque.
Shabbat Shalom.
Gorgeous! He looks like he may have just finished off the last dill pickle in that jar:-) I’m inspired to post some photos of my motley ancestors.
