Box Art

These cigarette-box-sized pieces of art designed by Jill Caporlingua will go in an old cigarette machine. Folks can then purchase Jill’s art from the cigarette machine instead of buying cigarettes (see ArtoMat.org). Isn’t that an ingenious way of recycling? I suppose they could buy other artists’ art, too, but wouldn’t you want to own one of these luscious little multi-colored boxes? Jill is my daughter’s art teacher and a friend.

This is very clever and the boxes are beautiful as well as colorful. What are they made of?
I believe they are little wooden blocks that the artist paints.

The company is based in North Carolina, which I love because that’s traditionally a heavy smoking state. It was started by an artist named Clark Whittington with one machine.
They are painted on little wood blocks.

We have an Art-o-Mat in Tacoma, but I’ve never known of a particular artist whose work is dispensed from the little machine.

Ingenuity is right, the artist recycles and reuses, the patrons have easy access to purchase. Neat and stylish. Since cigarettes are out of fashion, accessible art is a perfect use for the old machines. Cool indeed!
I like lots of colors and the simple thing, making one think, I could liked to do this too. The thing is; I haven’t thought about it, and never would, had I not been inspired.
The best art exhibitions are those who make me want to go home and create something myself.

No, she *used* to teach there. Long story – could tell you about it in person. Sigh. She teaches in her own apartment now.
It is so funny . . . a friend just came over about an hour ago and mentioned her son takes art lessons and said the teacher was Jill! I have to look into this and find out when classes are and other pertinent info . . .
