When the military owned Camp Kilmer on the edge of Highland Park, they left the Kilmer Woods intact. It helped buffer a munitions storage area. The earthen berms are still visible. Thus older woods survived alongside mown fields that have more recently begun reverting to woods. This mix of successional habitat supports a great variety of birds and other wildlife.
