The Florida-to-Maine route of the East Coast Greenway already passes through Highland Park, NJ. Hikers and bikers already can come along the dedicated route of the Delaware & Raritan canal and the Johnson Park bikeway, but for now they must then use our city streets before connecting later to other dedicated (no automobiles) routes. This Fall 2006 map shows the long-term goal of having most of the route dedicated rather than on-street, and in the Highland Park/Edison area putting more of the route close to the river.
