A discovery: a praying mantis egg case is found during weeding at the Native Plant Reserve by students organized by the Association of Indians at Rutgers. The praying mantis is considered one of the "beneficial insects" and is the state insect of Connecticut. The egg case was carefully replaced in the bed where it was found built around a weed stem. In spring it should release a large number of tiny new mantids.
