The other day I grabbed my camera because the starlings came out again. They again were making a lot of racket soon after dawn. I preferred the photo I got of the moon between the trees. This tree with seed balls is a sycamore; several old sycamores line our street.
Can any of you tell a bird from a dark profile? Is this a starling? Or a robin? Michelle says it’s a starling – note the thinner body, longish bill.
A few hours later I saw this blue jay in a tree. He flew away quickly.
That shot of the moon is incredible! It looks like a painting.
Thanks. I wasn’t crazy about either of my posted bird shots this week (I have one of the blue jay that I liked when I went click, but when I looked at the photo, the blue jay was a blue blur), but as anyone knows who takes bird shots, the moon moves really slowly in comparison.
I added your link to Nature Notes and three years ago, you were the first Nature Notes blogger….! I love your moon and birds shots..The bird in profile is a starling..long yellow bill and somewhat spotted body on black…It is very hard to get photos of birds period. The really great shots might have somebody with a tripod out for hours with a very good camera and lenses..Birds are fast and usually somewhere with something in the foreground that has the camera lens focused on it and not the bird. I take the photos anyway and keep them as a reminder of what I did see. And you saw starlings and a blue jay.. When the breeding season gets going the large flocks will break up into pairs and it won’t be so obvious and loud….Michelle
Starlings and a blue jay – and tons of sparrows, too.
I also like how the blue feathers of the blue jay echo the sky.
Ah, there’s a nice comment. Wish blue jays were easier to “catch” with my camera.
Lovely shot of the moon and the bird silhouette is pretty. Thanks for sharing, have a great day!
Thank you!
Nice shots! The moon shot is well framed with the branches 🙂
I love the moon shot and the bird profile is lovely. I’m lucky here in Florida because there are a lot of slow moving birds (egrets, herons etc.) that are much easier to get. I try to remember how happy I used to be (pre-digital camera) just to SEE a song-bird or a hummer and not be disappointed just because I didn’t get a picture.
The birds are singing their springtime songs. Isn’t it wonderful? The photo of the moon through the sycamore is great!
We’ve got a variety of chirps going on in our neighborhood now.
I have a similar moon photo. I say that might be a starling.
I’m thinking it’s a starling, too, because I had just seen tons of them in the sky.
Where are my comments..this is so strange..I am trying Leora…I don’t see the one from last night or the times I tried this morning..Starlings have a yellowish bill longer than a robins and are more sleek looking…keep at the bird photos…they are tough to get without an expensive camera and a tripod and tons of time…
Time for me to install better spam detection! Sorry, you ended up in spam. Yuck.
Tons of time – yup, I don’t possess that one. Nor the expensive equipment.
You can delete the extras…LOL
the moon shot is lovely as is the blue jay
you really caught the color
brava on being the very first Nature Notes blogger and for doing so many wonderful posts over the 3 years
And I had no idea I was the first!
I love your shot of the moon. I also like seeing the birds at daybreak.
it is almost impossible to tell which bird it is unless it is singing. 🙂
I love the shot of the bird through the branches.
