Kinneret Skies

Views of the area near the Kinneret, also known as the Sea of Galilee, in Northern Israel: I took these photos in late June while on our two week trip to Israel. The top one shows the hills of the Golan, with cars on the right parked near a Kinneret beach. Before Israel took over the Golan Heights in 1967, snipers would shoot down at the inhabitants of this area indiscriminately. The middle one shows the lake itself, with the Golan Heights in the distance. The bottom one is the beach at Ginosar, a resort on the Sea of Galilee. The old boat one sees gives tours on the lake; as this area is important to both Jews and Christians, I wonder if they tell one set of stories to Jews and another to Christians? And what do the Japanese tourists hear?

Update: if you want to hear a little more about the tourist tales, please read my comments below (comment #16, #20, #34). I love all the interest! Wish I could take more photos of Israel.

And what do the Japanese tourists hear?
Good question! Maybe both.
Great photos; especially the last one. You've spoilt us with some great shots this week.

I saw NJ in your header but I knew these photos weren't in NJ! Love the last photo. I'd love to take that boat ride and hear those stories myself!

The Sea of Galliee is such a familiar sounding place name, having listened to bible stories from my early childhood. Its always so interesting to see pictures of the actual place. Nice photos.

Good question. Wouldn't what is told to Christians have a lot of the same things told to Jewish tourist? We had to study the history of Israel in one of my Bible classes.

Reply
Leora says

Dee, if you are a Christian tourist, you learn about the stories of Jesus in this area. If you are a Jewish tourist, you visit graves of great rabbis (not that we did; we went to a waterpark!). So it really is two different sets of storytelling. We heard more biblical stories in the areas closer to Jerusalem.

Oh how beautiful! The Sea of Galilee - heard so many times, imagined, now a glimpse into that world.
Thanks for sharing these Leora.

I had to smile at "I wonder what the Japanese tourists hear."

I am taken with the boat as it looks so interesting. I think our family would confuse the tour guides as far as what stories to tell. My husband is Jewish, my step-daughters Korean, my niece African American, my son-in-law to be is Native American. Me..not sure what I am anymore..

Michelle, you could probably just go on either tour. Doesn't matter much to the tour guides, but it matters a lot to some tourists, the kind of presentation that they hear.

Leora: These are beautiful views of the Holy Land, I really enjoy your sharing them. The story wouldn't matter as much as being there.

Good question whether the stories change from group to group. ;-) It looks so peaceful in your photos that it's hard to realize the strife there.

Thank you for the tour of an area I have never visited and only read about. The pictures were lovely and your commentary was very interesting and thoughtful. The final picture is one I would frame!

Thanks for your visit and comments on my SWF!

I suspect the Japanese might get the Christian guide rather than the Jewish one - but what about the aetheists?

Can't one get a guide that tells about the flora and fauna?

Reply
Leora says

Gerald, as I said to Michelle, it's really the tourists that often want a religion-specific tour. Atheists can choose whatever they like. I suppose the Japanese tourists could do the same.
There are many knowledgeable flora and fauna guides in Israel, but one would get that sort of tour in an environmental center. There's one in the Hula Valley, north of the Kinneret, that I would love to visit someday.

I'd be curious to know too...

Perhaps the story of Jesus calming the storm in this sea would nice to tell, in whichever language or from whatever religion a tourist is...

and I'd certainly want to visit this place too! Thanks for sharing!

I had a few extra minutes to go back to some of the blogs that I had looked through earlier, but didn't get to spend enough time on. I keep a list and then go back later on and read more on certain ones that are of particular interest to me. Yours was one of those and is so good. I enjoyed so much your comments and you sharing your experiences on your two week vacation back there. I am going to also go back and read some more of your previous posts.

I really enjoyed your comment about wondering what the story the japanese or any other cultures for that matter would hear!!

The Sea of Galilee photo (and all of the pictures) is something I've read about for ever but actually seeing it through your eyes and hearing through your words, intensify my interest and I found myself continuing to think about this all day. I am so glad that I have found your blog!

You keep writing and I'll keep reading! Thanks so much for sharing your travels and thoughts with us!!

It's so interesting to see travel snapshots of that area. We only see images of Israel on the news, when violence is happening there. Thanks for sharing its beauty.
