SubscribeRed Murals at Historic Village
It’s fun to revisit one’s summer vacation when autumn is in full swing. Here are murals from a house in Historic Cold Spring Village in Cape May, New Jersey.
The murals were not painted in the 18th or 19th centuries, the periods the village is supposed to represent, but in the 1990’s by an artist who decided to depict what she thought life was like during those periods.
Maybe this is supposed to be the mural painter, teleported back in time? The village is fun and friendly, though our visit did have its anachronistic moments, like when the tour guide’s cell phone rang when she was explaining the layout of the old schoolhouse.

Lovely murals! The artist in the red dress sure stands out. Maybe she does represent the mural painter. Looks like she brought her dog and lunch.

If you have ever read To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf, that painting quite reminded me of the painter (Lily) in the story.
Did everybody laugh when her cell phone rang? The fold art murals are lovely, Leora! Happy Ruby Tuesday!
I meant “folk” not “fold.” Duh!
Murals like these make a visible difference also when they are made in non historic villages. I wish some of my town’s fathers could see this unique possibility of improvement.
One might easily adapt the thought that the painter is female.
Something about the bold naivistic style.

The murals are wonderful but, like you, I often wonder if life in the past was quite the way we imagine it to have been.
We modern dwellers like to think of life in a sort-of idealized past as being like the murals. We see a simplicity lacking today, the murals frozen in time. Of course, the art looks nice but the real houses are very cold and drafty in the winter and no electricity to preserve food in the summer. The practical realities could intrude, but I’ll stick with the idealized style of long ago…
Yes, we certainly do idealize the past! (and no flush toilets, either…)

The first shot, of the house, reminded me of a drawing of Samuel Adams’ house which was in the book “Samuel Adams” by David McCullough. I don’t know if it’s an accurate rendition of the time, but it is inviting, as is the artist’s “portrait.”
I will have to take a look at that book – you got me curious!
Wow the red house looks like it’s afloat! Cool!

The red house has no shadows; shading is what gives a painting its realistic grounding. The perspective lines of the house also look off – but it gives the mural a certain primitive look that the artist was aiming to achieve.

Leora, I just love murals. I live in a small town you have to go outside of it just to by undies (that is no joke) we never have cultural things like this, You’re so lucky to attend this I am glad you had a good time!
Those murals are lovely. Very peaceful and serene. Not quite like the times they depict, I think. The artist looks so happy in her country setting.
