Ruby Tuesday at Howell Farm
Each area of the farm to visit was marked on a tourist map with a number, and in those areas there was a subtle number marking the spot.
Does anyone know what kind of vegetation this is? I don’t think it’s swiss chard; the stems don’t look as coarse. Update: I have been informed by some of my readers (thank you, EGWow, Carletta and Jim) that these are beets. Jim says they need some fertilizer. I guess the farm folks are paying more attention to the animals than the garden.

The sight of chickens running free is beautiful and nostalgic.
Several of our neighbors had hens when I grew up. We used to feed them with dandelions.
The open door to the hen house is underlining my opiniion.
Animals still should have a good life, before fulfilling their mission on earth.

Cool shot of the hens, Leora. The leaves look like beets to me. Swiss chard and beets are close relatives. ;-)

Beets, huh? That would make sense.
I planted some beets seeds, on the oft chance that they will germinate and maybe I'll get to taste a home grown beet. Supposedly they prefer more alkaline soil.

These roosters have ruby detailing that looks great with the black and white patterned feathers. The red henhouse is coated with the perfect farm ruby barn red. A not very mechanized farm looking much as it did last century. A natural red collection, appealing in an old-fashioned way

Oh my Leora - I just love those roosters!
The black and white pattern of their feathers with the stark contrast of those red heads makes for a striking combination.
I can see this hanging in a 50's style kitchen with red vinyl covered chairs and a black and white checked floor.
Pickled beets would be good. :)

I have to join the chorus Leora. The chickens are fantastic. I've seen them at the country fair but never in a regular barnyard setting. I bet they were making the chattiest noises.

I was going to tell you that the plants are sickly looking beets. They need some more water and fertilizer.
