Today’s Flowers: Fall Rudbeckia

Rudbeckia or black-eyed susans in September 2009
Rudbeckia or black-eyed susans in September 2009

By the end of September my rudbeckia develop a worn look but also a reddish glow inside the yellow petals. Marigolds pop up between the rudbeckia and are looking well, with their ruffles of orange and yellow.

I love the way the rudbeckia look with the marigolds popping out. The photograph captures the flowers so well.

Beautiful fall colors, Leora! Mine looks the same...sad but true but we'll see them again next year! ;)

So delicate a color and blossom even at the close of the season.

Do you see any birds taking the seeds?

Leora says

The birds we see mostly are on our raspberry bushes. I've seen a male and female cardinal there (so proud of myself that I can distinguish the more brightly colored male from the paler red female), but never when my camera was ready.

I'm still talking about buying the bird feeder after my son's bar-mitzvah (which is soon! less than three weeks).

I love the way you have shown us the whole clump, rather than focusing on one flower. We see a true picture of the decline of the summer!!

Rudbeckia are such hard workers in the garden! I love them almost as much as purple coneflowers.

No color at all remains on our rudbeckia - only the black centers. Am already looking forward to them coming back next year.
